What is the most important information I should know about Imitrex?
• Do not use Imitrex without first talking to your doctor if the headacheyou are experiencing is not like other migraines that you have had imitrex nasal spray.
• Do not use this medication if you have heart disease including angina(chest pain), history of a heart attack, or high blood pressure imitrex nasal spray. Serious, evenfatal, side effects involving the heart have been reported with Imitrex imitrex nasal spray.
• If your symptoms do not improve at all after using one dose of any formof Imitrex, contact your doctor before using any more doses imitrex nasal spray. More medicationwill not further treat symptoms imitrex nasal spray.
What is Imitrex?
• Imitrex is a headache medicine imitrex nasal spray. It is believed to work by causing vasoconstriction(narrowing) of arteries and veins that supply blood to the head imitrex nasal spray.
• Imitrex is used to treat vascular headaches such as migraine and clusterheadaches imitrex nasal spray. Imitrex will not prevent migraines or cluster headaches or reducethe number of attacks imitrex nasal spray. It will only treat a migraine or cluster headache thatis already occurring imitrex nasal spray.
• Imitrex may also be used for purposes other than those listed in thismedication guide imitrex nasal spray.
What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before using Imitrex?
• Do not use Imitrex if you
· have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as isocarboxazid(Marplan), tranylcypromine (Parnate), or phenelzine (Nardil) in the last 14days;
· have basilar or hemiplegic migraine headaches;
· have had a heart attack, have angina (chest pain), or have anothertype of heart disease;
· have had a stroke or transient ischemic attacks (TIAs);
· are experiencing a headache that is not like other migraines that youhave had;
· have taken an ergot-based medication within the last 24 hours --ergot-basedmedicines include methysergide (Sansert), ergotamine (Ergostat, Medihaler Ergotamine),dihydroergotamine mesylate (D.H.E., Migranal Nasal Spray), and ergotamine combinationproducts (Cafergot, Ercaf, Wigraine, Cafatine, Cafatine-PB, Cafetrate); or
· have taken another migraine medicine such as almotriptan (Axert), frovatriptan(Frova), naratriptan (Amerge), rizatriptan (Maxalt, Maxalt-MLT), or zolmitriptan(Zomig, Zomig-ZMT) in the past 24 hours imitrex nasal spray.
• Using Imitrex may be dangerous if you have any of the conditions, orhave taken any of the medications, listed above imitrex nasal spray.
• Before using Imitrex, tell your doctor if you
· have risk factors for heart disease such as high blood pressure, afamily history of heart disease, high cholesterol (a type of fat), are overweight,diabetes, smoke cigarettes, are postmenopausal, are a male over 40 years ofage;
· have circulation problems such as Raynaud syndrome;
· have liver disease;
· have kidney disease; or
· have seizures or epilepsy imitrex nasal spray.
• You may not be able to use Imitrex, or you may require a dosage adjustmentor special monitoring during treatment if you have any of the conditions listedabove imitrex nasal spray.
• Imitrex is in the FDA pregnancy category C imitrex nasal spray. This means that it is notknown whether Imitrex will be harmful to an unborn baby imitrex nasal spray. Do not use this medicationwithout first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnantduring treatment imitrex nasal spray.
• Imitrex passes into breast milk and may affect a nursing infant imitrex nasal spray. Do notuse Imitrex without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding ababy imitrex nasal spray.
How should I use Imitrex?
• Use Imitrex exactly as directed by your doctor imitrex nasal spray. If you do not understandthese directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you imitrex nasal spray.
• Take one tablet, administer an injection, or use the nasal spray as soonas you notice symptoms of a migraine, or at any time during an attack imitrex nasal spray.
• Take each oral dose with a full glass of water imitrex nasal spray. If your symptoms go away,but then return, you can take an additional oral dose 2 hours after the first,up to a maximum of 200 mg in 24 hours, unless otherwise directed by your doctor imitrex nasal spray. Never take more than this amount imitrex nasal spray.
• Administer Imitrex injectable directly beneath the skin (subcutaneously)as soon as you notice symptoms of a migraine or cluster headache imitrex nasal spray. Ask your doctoror nurse to show you how to use the auto-injector, and read the directions thataccompany the package imitrex nasal spray. Do not inject this medication if you are unsure how imitrex nasal spray. Never inject any Imitrex that is discolored or that has particles in it imitrex nasal spray. Ifyour headache is relieved, but then returns, you can use a second dose 2 hoursafter the first dose imitrex nasal spray. Do not use more than 2 doses in 24 hours imitrex nasal spray.
• For Imitrex nasal, gently blow your nose to clear any mucous imitrex nasal spray. Insertthe tip about 1 cm (one-half inch) into the nostril, pointing it straight upinto the nasal canal imitrex nasal spray. Block your other nostril and keep your head upright imitrex nasal spray. Pumpand sniff gently at the same time imitrex nasal spray. Try not to sneeze or blow your nose justafter using the spray imitrex nasal spray. If your headache is relieved, but then returns, you canuse a second dose 2 hours after the first dose imitrex nasal spray. Do not use more than 2 dosesin 24 hours imitrex nasal spray.
• If your symptoms do not improve at all after using one dose of any formof Imitrex, contact your doctor before using any more doses imitrex nasal spray. More medicationwill not further treat symptoms imitrex nasal spray.
• Store Imitrex at room temperature away from moisture, heat, light, andthe reach of children imitrex nasal spray. Throw away any unused medicine on the expiration date imitrex nasal spray.
What happens if I miss a dose?
• Since Imitrex is used to treat migraines or cluster headaches as theyoccur and not to prevent them, missing a dose is not a problem imitrex nasal spray. Use only thedoses you need, according to your doctor's instructions imitrex nasal spray.
What happens if I overdose?
• Seek emergency medical attention if an overdose is suspected imitrex nasal spray.
• Symptoms of a Imitrex overdose might include tremor, redness, or a warmfeeling in your arms and legs, irregular breathing, large pupils; an uncoordinatedfeeling; and chest pain imitrex nasal spray.
What should I avoid while using Imitrex?
• Do not use Imitrex without first talking to your doctor if the headacheyou are experiencing is not like other migraines that you have had imitrex nasal spray.
What are the possible side effects of Imitrex?
• If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop usingImitrex and seek emergency medical attention:
· an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat;swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives);
· severe or prolonged chest pain or an irregular heartbeat; or
· sudden and/or severe abdominal pain imitrex nasal spray.
• Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur imitrex nasal spray. Continueto use Imitrex and talk to your doctor if you experience
· nausea;
· drowsiness or dizziness;
· tingling, flushing, warmth, redness, or heaviness of a body part;
· unpleasant taste in the mouth (nasal spray);
· nasal irritation (nasal spray); or
· injection site discomfort (injection) imitrex nasal spray.
• Side effects other than those listed here may also occur imitrex nasal spray. Talk to yourdoctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome imitrex nasal spray.
What other drugs will affect Imitrex?
• Do not use Imitrex if you have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI)such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), tranylcypromine (Parnate), or phenelzine (Nardil)within the last 14 days imitrex nasal spray. The combination could cause seizures, nausea, vomiting,sweating, flushing, and dizziness imitrex nasal spray.
• Do not use Imitrex without first talking to your doctor if you have takenany of the following medicines within the previous 24 hours:
· an ergot-based medication within the last 24 hours imitrex nasal spray. Ergot-based medicinesinclude methysergide (Sansert), ergotamine (Ergostat), dihydroergotamine (D.H.E.,Migranal Nasal Spray), and ergotamine combination products (Cafergot, Ercaf,Wigraine, Cafatine, Cafatine-PB, Cafetrate); or
· another migraine medicine such as almotriptan (Axert), frovatriptan(Frova), naratriptan (Amerge), rizatriptan (Maxalt, Maxalt-MLT), or zolmitriptan(Zomig, Zomig-ZMT) imitrex nasal spray.
• Using Imitrex within 24 hours of any of the medicines listed above maybe dangerous imitrex nasal spray.
• Before using Imitrex, tell your doctor if you are taking a selectiveserotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) such as citalopram (Celexa), fluoxetine(Prozac), fluvoxamine (Luvox), paroxetine (Paxil), or sertraline (Zoloft) imitrex nasal spray. Youmay not be able to use Imitrex, or you may require a dosage adjustment or specialmonitoring during treatment if you are taking any of the medicines listed imitrex nasal spray.
• Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with Imitrex imitrex nasal spray. Talkto your doctor and pharmacist before taking any prescription or over-the-countermedicines, including herbal products imitrex nasal spray.
