What is the most important information I should know about Imitrex?
• Do not use Imitrex without first talking to your doctor if the headacheyou are experiencing is not like other migraines that you have had order imitrex.
• Do not use this medication if you have heart disease including angina(chest pain), history of a heart attack, or high blood pressure order imitrex. Serious, evenfatal, side effects involving the heart have been reported with Imitrex order imitrex.
• If your symptoms do not improve at all after using one dose of any formof Imitrex, contact your doctor before using any more doses order imitrex. More medicationwill not further treat symptoms order imitrex.
What is Imitrex?
• Imitrex is a headache medicine order imitrex. It is believed to work by causing vasoconstriction(narrowing) of arteries and veins that supply blood to the head order imitrex.
• Imitrex is used to treat vascular headaches such as migraine and clusterheadaches order imitrex. Imitrex will not prevent migraines or cluster headaches or reducethe number of attacks order imitrex. It will only treat a migraine or cluster headache thatis already occurring order imitrex.
• Imitrex may also be used for purposes other than those listed in thismedication guide order imitrex.
What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before using Imitrex?
• Do not use Imitrex if you
· have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as isocarboxazid(Marplan), tranylcypromine (Parnate), or phenelzine (Nardil) in the last 14days;
· have basilar or hemiplegic migraine headaches;
· have had a heart attack, have angina (chest pain), or have anothertype of heart disease;
· have had a stroke or transient ischemic attacks (TIAs);
· are experiencing a headache that is not like other migraines that youhave had;
· have taken an ergot-based medication within the last 24 hours --ergot-basedmedicines include methysergide (Sansert), ergotamine (Ergostat, Medihaler Ergotamine),dihydroergotamine mesylate (D.H.E., Migranal Nasal Spray), and ergotamine combinationproducts (Cafergot, Ercaf, Wigraine, Cafatine, Cafatine-PB, Cafetrate); or
· have taken another migraine medicine such as almotriptan (Axert), frovatriptan(Frova), naratriptan (Amerge), rizatriptan (Maxalt, Maxalt-MLT), or zolmitriptan(Zomig, Zomig-ZMT) in the past 24 hours order imitrex.
• Using Imitrex may be dangerous if you have any of the conditions, orhave taken any of the medications, listed above order imitrex.
• Before using Imitrex, tell your doctor if you
· have risk factors for heart disease such as high blood pressure, afamily history of heart disease, high cholesterol (a type of fat), are overweight,diabetes, smoke cigarettes, are postmenopausal, are a male over 40 years ofage;
· have circulation problems such as Raynaud syndrome;
· have liver disease;
· have kidney disease; or
· have seizures or epilepsy order imitrex.
• You may not be able to use Imitrex, or you may require a dosage adjustmentor special monitoring during treatment if you have any of the conditions listedabove order imitrex.
• Imitrex is in the FDA pregnancy category C order imitrex. This means that it is notknown whether Imitrex will be harmful to an unborn baby order imitrex. Do not use this medicationwithout first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnantduring treatment order imitrex.
• Imitrex passes into breast milk and may affect a nursing infant order imitrex. Do notuse Imitrex without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding ababy order imitrex.
How should I use Imitrex?
• Use Imitrex exactly as directed by your doctor order imitrex. If you do not understandthese directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you order imitrex.
• Take one tablet, administer an injection, or use the nasal spray as soonas you notice symptoms of a migraine, or at any time during an attack order imitrex.
• Take each oral dose with a full glass of water order imitrex. If your symptoms go away,but then return, you can take an additional oral dose 2 hours after the first,up to a maximum of 200 mg in 24 hours, unless otherwise directed by your doctor order imitrex. Never take more than this amount order imitrex.
• Administer Imitrex injectable directly beneath the skin (subcutaneously)as soon as you notice symptoms of a migraine or cluster headache order imitrex. Ask your doctoror nurse to show you how to use the auto-injector, and read the directions thataccompany the package order imitrex. Do not inject this medication if you are unsure how order imitrex. Never inject any Imitrex that is discolored or that has particles in it order imitrex. Ifyour headache is relieved, but then returns, you can use a second dose 2 hoursafter the first dose order imitrex. Do not use more than 2 doses in 24 hours order imitrex.
• For Imitrex nasal, gently blow your nose to clear any mucous order imitrex. Insertthe tip about 1 cm (one-half inch) into the nostril, pointing it straight upinto the nasal canal order imitrex. Block your other nostril and keep your head upright order imitrex. Pumpand sniff gently at the same time order imitrex. Try not to sneeze or blow your nose justafter using the spray order imitrex. If your headache is relieved, but then returns, you canuse a second dose 2 hours after the first dose order imitrex. Do not use more than 2 dosesin 24 hours order imitrex.
• If your symptoms do not improve at all after using one dose of any formof Imitrex, contact your doctor before using any more doses order imitrex. More medicationwill not further treat symptoms order imitrex.
• Store Imitrex at room temperature away from moisture, heat, light, andthe reach of children order imitrex. Throw away any unused medicine on the expiration date order imitrex.
What happens if I miss a dose?
• Since Imitrex is used to treat migraines or cluster headaches as theyoccur and not to prevent them, missing a dose is not a problem order imitrex. Use only thedoses you need, according to your doctor's instructions order imitrex.
What happens if I overdose?
• Seek emergency medical attention if an overdose is suspected order imitrex.
• Symptoms of a Imitrex overdose might include tremor, redness, or a warmfeeling in your arms and legs, irregular breathing, large pupils; an uncoordinatedfeeling; and chest pain order imitrex.
What should I avoid while using Imitrex?
• Do not use Imitrex without first talking to your doctor if the headacheyou are experiencing is not like other migraines that you have had order imitrex.
What are the possible side effects of Imitrex?
• If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop usingImitrex and seek emergency medical attention:
· an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat;swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives);
· severe or prolonged chest pain or an irregular heartbeat; or
· sudden and/or severe abdominal pain order imitrex.
• Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur order imitrex. Continueto use Imitrex and talk to your doctor if you experience
· nausea;
· drowsiness or dizziness;
· tingling, flushing, warmth, redness, or heaviness of a body part;
· unpleasant taste in the mouth (nasal spray);
· nasal irritation (nasal spray); or
· injection site discomfort (injection) order imitrex.
• Side effects other than those listed here may also occur order imitrex. Talk to yourdoctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome order imitrex.
What other drugs will affect Imitrex?

• Using Imitrex within 24 hours of any of the medicines listed above maybe dangerous order imitrex.
• Before using Imitrex, tell your doctor if you are taking a selectiveserotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) such as citalopram (Celexa), fluoxetine(Prozac), fluvoxamine (Luvox), paroxetine (Paxil), or sertraline (Zoloft) order imitrex. Youmay not be able to use Imitrex, or you may require a dosage adjustment or specialmonitoring during treatment if you are taking any of the medicines listed order imitrex.
